The current statistics of youth the employment rate in Uganda stand at 2.48 percent as of 2019, this rate speaks out loud that employment opportunities in Uganda are not only scarce but few in terms of availability. Well as this is a known problem, we must also recognize the fact that countries like Uganda lose a lot of their youth talent to foreign countries (Diaspora) especially the Middle East.
The available statistics show that the unemployment rate in Uganda has averaged between 4.49% in 1999 and 2.48 in 2019 according to the International Labor Organization (ILO) data available. It is also very cardinal to know that Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, with about 78% under the age of 30 representing a significant potential of growth if this population of youths is provided with opportunities. Unfortunately, despite all the efforts by donors to establish programs in the country putting young people to work in collaboration with the Uganda Government, there is still a huge gap when it comes to finding real employment opportunities within the country.

Due to this fact above, many Ugandan youths have found themselves at the crossroad of either moving to the diaspora to seek opportunities or continue to struggle with on and off opportunities within Uganda. Majority of the youths have had fewer chances of deciding to stay Home due to the uncertainty of the nature of opportunities available and made that tough decisions of moving to the diaspora to do all sorts of jobs to ace a living. Despite the job creation efforts in Uganda just like in many other countries in Africa, the youth employment challenge has hardly diminished. This is why it is time to strategically reassess the situation and try something new like intentionally training labor that is officially required by foreign economies.
However, we must also appreciate the mushrooming labor companies that are taking Ugandans to the Middle East even though a lot of issues need to be streamlined with these labor agencies. With Uganda’s employment rate standing at 9.2% in 2020 and the unemployment rate for youths aged between 18-30 at 13.3%, it is very evident that the companies recruiting youths for foreign labor opportunities are playing a huge role in helping the youths find something to do and fix their future. 83.5% of the Ugandan population aged between 15-29 work in informal jobs, and that figure is 10% higher for young women than men. This is why when it comes to the number of Ugandan youths leaving the nation to seek opportunities in the Middle East, girls are more than boys.
