How A Piece Of Land Sustained Two Generations Of One Family

Katusiime Pheobe is a 76 year old widow in Rwebihuro Village, Kakika Parish in Mbarara District. She owns two acres of land on which sits her home, and a big garden where she grows Beans, Maize, and Cassava. On this piece of land also sits a small Banana plantation from which she produces Matooke. All her farm produce is sold in markets to earn money to sustain her family.

Phoebe has had this land since the 80’s and she has never thought of anything better that happened to her.
From this land, she managed to pay school fees for her four sons and three daughters, who are now grown and have their own families.

“I used to cater for my children’s school needs using proceeds from my farm produce. Right now, this farm is paying school fees for my grandchildren. Sometimes I’d borrow money from our local saving groups and then pay back using money I earned from selling crops from my farm. There has always been demand of my farm produce because of the Barracks, Koranorya, Mbarara and other towns around.

Over time, I have gained knowledge and skills in sustainable organic agriculture. These have helped me to provide for my family even when I had no other income streams. I have always earned from this piece of land and I would never trade it for anything.” Phoebe explained.

From this story, it is evident how a piece of land can sustain a family for generations. Of all assets, Land is among the most important and that’s why you should buy yourself a piece of land.
