ACQUIRING FARM LAND

Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda. Thankfully it has been rebranded and the dream of planting crops and raring animals for commercial and home use has come alive in most of us. Not only do we want to do farming after retirement but we plan to do it now as ‘a real job’.

If you wish to start your own farm now or in the near future, plan ahead; read people’s stories, watch videos of their experiences; have your questions answered. . . I know to some of us, one of the main queries is how to acquire the desired land to do our farming.

As some are born in homes with enough land available for them to farm, not most of us have this privilege. We ache to have our own land to do our farming and So we set out to look for land to buy. Buying land scares some of us; we think it is so expensive and that isn’t true. Land is actually affordable, especially that for farming.

Many are times we believe for someone to be a farmer, they need big chunks of Land. This for sure makes economic sense but one can yield so much from farming on smaller piece of land too. A friend of mine, Anthony broods ‘day old’ chicks and sells them at one month from the backyard his 50*100 homestead plot. He broods up to 500s of chicks every month earning him approximately ugx 4m. I know of so many people earning so much from one acre projects or less.

So, if you are passionate about farming and you want to embark on this journey;

1. Do your homework, research, read people’s stories, watch their videos, teach yourself all you can. Good thing there is all the free information on the internet. Get into the land market, ask questions, make sure you buy land that suits the type of farming you want to do. I advise you to buy land that connects you directly to the consumer. Land that isn’t so so so far away from your market.

2. Be clear and realistic about the budget you’ll need to support yourself and your farm, and also about how you’ll get the income you need.

3. Start small: For most beginning farmers, we are advised to start small to allow time for details to be worked out, for additional learning to occur, and to mitigate the size and scope of problems that will inevitably arise.
