Women’s Day! Why women access to land is important

Contrary to what existed in the past that women traditionally were the home makers as men moved out to work, provide for the family, today many women have taken a keen interest that having a successful and comfortable home beyond just being home keepers but taking part in its social-economic transformation and among these is a real estate sector.

While in the past access to land was mainly through their husbands or sons, today have beaten the past stereotypes and own land either individually, as a family and communally but either way women contribution in real estate sector especially owning land cannot be underestimated, a reason we need to celebrate these ladies but also continue to support them on land acquisitions.

First of all when women are shut or don’t become part of land ownership there is a ripple effect that is spread across communities including failure to sustain a family, educate children and meet other family/individual needs. Land acquisition is part of economic empowerment and empowers a mother to support and care for the family.

That is why at Amity realtors we have made gender inclusion in real estate markets a priority and we have seen a good number of women succeed in this sector.

“Women have demonstrated to us that they can transform their families if they can gain access to land that is why they remain part of our priorities in assisting them access land through getting affordable land but also giving them advice on financing these land acquisitions,” says Mr Herbert Tushabe, the director Amity realtors.

Celebrated women in real estate have become a blessing in utilizing especially urban use to better and transform their families. For example Ms Asiati Birungi deals in flowers business along High street, Mbarara city which she started in 2009 after she lost her husband and has successfully raised her three children, bought another plot in Rwentojo in Kakiikia, Mbarara north division.

“I turned our less than 50 by 100 plot in Biafra into flowers growing when I lost a husband in 2000,I have been able to look after my family ,and bought a plot of land in Rwentojo. I earn between Shs 200,000-300,000 a month from this small garden, “explains Ms Birungi.

Like Birugi many other women in Mbarara have been able to think outside the normal and have utilized and invested in land to develop themselves and their families.

Land remains a family’s main asset and its ownership determines equality of opportunity and this means women should not just sit and watch their husbands, men invest in land markets but also be partakers.

Women today need the ability to be part of owning and investing in land to increase their economic opportunities and that of their families. Successful homes and women have been part of the home buying process, land investments like commercial buildings, rentals, setting up projects like schools.

As we celebrate women’s day we appreciate the role of women in the real estate sector, and personal growth through land acquisitions for home owning and other investments.
